You are paying for clicks and getting nothing back: no calls, no form submissions, no WhatsApp messages. In almost every case the traffic is fine and the break is on your side of the click, somewhere between the ad and the moment a person would actually contact you. This article walks that path stage by stage so you can find the exact point where interest turns into a bounce, then fix that instead of pouring more money into the ad.
It is for a Zimbabwean business owner or marketer running Meta or Google ads to a website or landing page and wondering why the spend is not producing enquiries. By the end you will have a diagnostic you can run in an afternoon.
TL;DR
- First, rule out the false alarm: leads can arrive and never reach you if a form email goes to spam, a WhatsApp click never sends, or a notification is off. Test your own contact paths before blaming anything.
- Then work the path in order: ad-to-page match, page load on mobile data, clarity of what you do, the offer, contact friction, and tracking. The break is usually one stage, not all six.
- Clicks mean the ad worked. A click that does not convert is a destination problem far more often than an ad problem.
- Use the diagnostic table below to match the symptom to the stage and the likely fix.
- When one page fails several stages at once, the honest fix is a rebuild of the page or site, not another month of spend.
This is the diagnosis step. It does not cover getting the page ready before you switch ads on (see is your website ready for paid traffic), nor what to do after a lead lands (see the ad lead follow-up checklist).
Short answer: where clicks usually leak
Paid clicks turn into nothing when the destination breaks the promise the ad made or makes contact harder than it needs to be. Work six stages in order: does the page match the ad, does it load fast on mobile data, is it instantly clear what you do, is the offer worth acting on, is contacting you effortless, and are leads actually being recorded. The leak is almost always one specific stage you can name and fix.
Before you diagnose: are you sure there are no leads?
The most expensive mistake here is assuming the funnel is broken when leads are quietly arriving and not reaching you. Rule this out first, because everything else is wasted effort if the real issue is a notification.
Check all of it: the inbox the contact form emails to, the spam and promotions folders, the WhatsApp number on the site, your phone log, and any web-form dashboard. Then test the paths yourself. Open the site on a phone using mobile data, submit the form with a real message, and tap the WhatsApp button. A surprising share of "no leads" problems are a form that fails silently after submit, an email landing in spam, or a WhatsApp link that opens the app but never actually sends.
If the paths work and the inbox is genuinely empty, you have a real funnel problem. Now find the stage.
The six stages, in order
1. Ad-to-page match
The click carries an expectation. If your ad promotes a specific product, price or service and the click lands on a generic homepage, most people feel they arrived in the wrong place and leave. The page has to visibly continue the sentence the ad started, using the same offer, the same words, and ideally the same image.
Send the ad's traffic to a focused page that matches the promise, not the front door. If you are unsure what that page should even be, our guide on what a landing page is and when you need one covers the difference between a homepage and a page built to convert a campaign.
2. Page load on mobile data
Most paid clicks in Zimbabwe open on a phone, often on a prepaid data bundle and a connection that is nothing like your office wifi. A page that is fast for you can be slow enough on mobile data that the visitor gives up before it renders. That looks identical to "the ad is not working," but it is a speed problem.
Test the destination on a phone on mobile data, not on wifi. If it crawls, the click was paid for and then thrown away while the page was still loading.
3. Clarity in the first screen
Assume the visitor decides in seconds whether they are in the right place. The first screen has to answer three things without scrolling: what you do, who it is for, and what to do next. If a stranger has to read three paragraphs to work out you fit tyres, sell furniture or handle conveyancing, you lose them.
Show a new person the page for five seconds, then hide it and ask what the business does and what they would do next. If they cannot say, the click had interest and the page wasted it.
4. The offer and the reason to act
A clear page with a weak offer still stalls. If there is no compelling reason to contact you now rather than "later," later usually means never. The offer does not have to be a discount. It can be a free quote, a same-day callback, a site visit, a stock check, or simply a clear price when competitors hide theirs.
Read your page as a stranger who is comparing three suppliers and ask: does this give me a reason to pick up the phone today? If the honest answer is no, the leak is the offer, not the traffic.
5. Contact friction
This is where good clicks die quietly. Every extra step between wanting to contact you and doing it costs you leads. A ten-field form, a phone number that is not tappable on a phone, a WhatsApp button that is missing on mobile, a "contact us" buried in the footer: each one turns a warm click cold.
Make the next action obvious and effortless. A short form, a tappable number, and a WhatsApp button that is visible without scrolling do more for enquiries than a bigger ad budget. For which fields to keep and which to cut, the form itself is a decision worth getting right on its own page.
6. Tracking and attribution
Sometimes the funnel works and you simply cannot see it. If conversions are not tracked, or calls and WhatsApp chats never get counted, you can be getting enquiries and still believe the campaign failed. This does not create leads, but it stops you from cancelling a campaign that is quietly working, or from spending more on one that is not.
Confirm that a form submission, a call and a WhatsApp click are each recorded somewhere you check. Grounded numbers beat a gut feeling that "the ads do nothing."
Diagnostic: where it breaks and what to check
| Stage | Sign it is breaking here | What to check | Likely fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ad-to-page match | High clicks, instant bounce, low time on page | Does the page repeat the ad's offer, words and image | Point ads to a focused page that continues the ad's promise |
| Page load on mobile data | People leave before the page finishes loading | Load the destination on a phone on mobile data, not wifi | Compress images, lighten the page, host closer, or rebuild if too heavy |
| Clarity in the first screen | Visitors scroll away without acting | Five-second test: what you do, who for, what next | Rewrite the first screen so the offer is obvious without scrolling |
| The offer | Clear page, still no enquiries | Is there a reason to act now, not "later" | Add a specific, low-risk offer: free quote, callback, price, site visit |
| Contact friction | Clicks arrive, contact does not | Form length, tappable number, WhatsApp visible on mobile | Shorten the form, expose phone and WhatsApp above the fold |
| Tracking | You "feel" it fails but cannot prove it | Are form, call and WhatsApp events recorded | Set up basic conversion tracking so real leads are visible |
Work down the table. Fix the first stage that fails before touching the next, because an early leak hides everything below it.
When the fix is a rebuild, not a tweak
Sometimes the diagnostic keeps failing at several stages at once. The page is slow on mobile, buries what you do, hides contact below the fold, and cannot be edited without something else breaking. At that point, patching one issue at a time is slower and dearer than starting the destination fresh.
If that is your situation, a rebuild of the page or the site is usually cheaper over a few months than continuing to buy clicks that land somewhere incapable of converting them. Deciding which ad platform to spend on is a separate question; if that is still open, see Meta ads versus Google ads for Zimbabwe businesses. But no platform choice rescues a destination that fails the six stages above.
Your next step
Clicks that produce no calls, forms or WhatsApp messages are rarely a traffic problem. They are a break at one nameable stage between the ad and the moment someone would contact you. Rule out the silent-lead false alarm first, then run the six stages in order and fix the earliest one that fails.
